Communication & Relationships

Building fulfilling relationships. Our work focuses on the ability to communicate honestly, respectfully, and compassionately—with a priority on meeting the needs of all concerned. We use principles and methods based on NVC—Nonviolent, or Compassionate Communication, originated and taught worldwide by Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. For years, Suska Davis, Ph.D., has integrated this simple but very powerful system into her teaching, mediating and counseling practice. Suska is joined by NVC trainer Liv Monroe and sometimes others who teach NVC here & in other communities.

"Practicing Intimacy" - Communication for Couples Workshops

Saturday, New Date will be announced soon, 9:30 AM - 5 PM with Suska & Rod Davis – Olympia (call for location) – $150/couple, $85/single ($180 and $110 respectively after 6/7), some scholarships available, please inquire

True intimacy rests on the foundation of completely open honest sharing of what's alive in each person in an atmosphere of trust, safety, and sensitivity. Suska and Rod Davis provide a powerful in-depth NVC-based experiential workshop for those who want to build more intimacy into their primary relationship, so that it will grow strong and flourish. The simple principles and steps of NVC, when sincerely practiced, make a very solid foundation for relationship depth and longevity. Even in the short term, they can facilitate major breakthroughs. Here are the core tools and skills necessary to avoid relationship crisis and to build deep honesty, trust, and respect into your relationship. For those new to NVC, a practice-as-you-go introduction is incorporated into the workshop. We want every couple and person to experience first-hand the power of clear, honest, empathy-based communication.

NVC-based Anger / Triggers Workshop

date to be announced, 9:30 AM - 5 PM“Dealing with Anger & Emotional Triggers – A Positive Approach” with Suska Davis, Ph.D., Olympia (call for location) – $85/person ($110 after 1/19)

Nearly all of us are triggered by something, and when we are, we can easily revert to thinking and acting in ways that we later regret. In this workshop Suska Davis, Ph.D., engages you in a close look at the phenomenon of anger and other emotional triggers. By utilizing principles and methods based on NVC participants explore and practice how to respond consciously and constructively when either they feel angry or triggered in some way or the person they are interacting with appears to be so. The more quickly we can connect with the need underlying those feelings, the quicker they can be transformed into something that connects us with the other person and creates an opportunity for that need to be fulfilled. Suska also takes a look at in-the-moment strategies for tense situations when we or others feel triggered.

Some theory and lots of practice. Nonviolent Communication has tremendous potential to renew and transform relationships as well as to positively shape our whole approach to life. This workshop gives us the chance to dig in and practice working with the principles and methods of NVC in different situations: relationship conflict, dealing with "jackal shows," self-empathy, anger issues, dealing with teens, giving appreciations, "hockey pucks," boundaries, and more. We will work with whatever situations and challenges come up for participants.
